Reminiscing about the days of yesteryear is a common occurrence these days. Especially during mother's day. My folks never failed to load up the wagon with all of us kids and drive to nearby Selah to El Ranchito. It was always fun visiting that place because they not only served great barbacoa but they had chimpanzees in captivity. My brother Joe and I always like to mess with these guys. They knew us and looked forward to throwing stuff at us.. we did the same. It was the ultimate barrio experience. Being that my family made a living playing music, all of us would set up our sound system and begin playing music for all the folks under the patio. I remember fainting during a performance due to the hot hot hot weather. My grandma would always say" le hicieron ojo". Evil eye! ooohhh..
They used to make me wear an ojo de venado on a chain around my neck. It was a nuisance, mainly because the weight of my accordion would press the rock hard "ojo" into my chest. It is mothers day today.. so I will be looking for barbacoa and calling my mom (80 years old). She is going strong.. Praise be to God!
